Termites belong to the insect class Isoptera (Iso = equal; ptera = wing).
- Identification: Looks like a white ant that has only 2 body segments. ¼”
to 3/8” in length, depending upon caste.
- While not as aggressive in the northeast as in some parts of the country,
subterranean termites affect an estimated 20% of all U.S. homes and cause
over $1 billion damage annually.
- Predominate species in this area is Eastern Subterranean Termite –
Reticulitermes flavipes.
- Termites feed on wood and may also destroy books, papers or anything
containing cellulose.
- Termites are most closely related to cockroaches (Blattaria).
